Melbourne coach Steven King put Luker Kentfield on the agenda as a potential debut against West Coast on Sunday, while forward-midfielder Thomas Matthews also looms as a first-gamer.

The Demons will be forced into one change, with veteran forward Brody Mihocek ruled out with a hamstring injury for a minimum of three weeks.

"We've got training today, obviously we play Sunday, so it's early in the week," King said on Wednesday.

"But we've got options with the two Maxes that can play ruck/forward, Luker Kentfield played well (in the VFL), there's an opportunity for us to go smaller, maybe with a Bayley Fritsch playing taller.

"We've got options."

Kentfield has produced an impressive four-week stretch in the VFL, kicking nine goals whilst also pinch-hitting in the ruck.

But King could look at smaller options, with Max Gawn and Max Heath working well in tandem between the ruck and roles inside 50, with youngsters Jacob van Rooyen and Matthew Jefferson holding down the fort.

That could open a spot for Matthews, who has impressed since joining the club in last year's draft as one of the biggest bolters in the crop.

The Moe product has played five games for Casey after an injury-interrupted draft year due to a meniscus issue, which is very much in the rearview mirror.

Matthews has kicked eight goals in five weeks, but his latest outing caught the eye of reserves coach Rhett McLennan.

"That was Tommy's best game of the year," he said.

"He's building nicely into form, kicked three, with one taken on the goal line, so he probably should've had four, and is continuing to improve week by week."

Premiership defender Jake Bowey played his first full game in the VFL, coming off a Lisfranc injury in December.

Fellow backman Trent Rivers is recovering from a grumbly knee that has persisted throughout the early stages of the year.

The Demons opted to give him some time off, but after a strong week on the track, he has integrated with the main group and could return to some level of football.
