Melbourne coach Steven King is confident that unrestricted free agents Tom Sparrow and Kade Chandler will re-sign with the club despite links to rival clubs.

The pair are working through their options beyond 2026, and their career-best form has piqued the interest of opposition sides.

Chandler has put off contract talks until later in the year, while Sparrow has been linked with both South Australian clubs.

King, who doesn't get involved in contract talks, is positive about the prospect of them continuing their time with the Demons.

"I'd like to think so," he said.

"What they've done for our club, this year, and for me in particular, from day one, they were two who stood out for me from both a talent point of view, and what they were doing on the track, as well as a character point of view.

"I think they're just two young leaders who have grabbed hold of this club like it's their own. I'm really fortunate to have those two guys playing at the level that they are, but also pushing this group forward together.

"I don't talk to them about (their contract situations). All I try and do is make sure that we've got an environment where they can thrive and be at their best both on and off the field.

"And I hope they are feeling the same way I do in love coming to work everyday and spending time with them.

"I've loved their year so far. I'm thrilled they are getting the recognition they deserve for the way they're playing. But what you don't see away from the ground, and that's where they're at their best. The type of people that they are and what they bring to our club culturally."

Sparrow has benefitted from the departure of midfield pair Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver, while the injury to Jack Viney has provided more opportunities inside the centre square.

Playing all 10 games, the 25-year-old has averaged a career-high 20.3 possessions, 6.4 tackles and 4.9 clearances, taking on a more prominent role in the senior side.

Chandler's return has also been impressive in the first half of the season, recording 16 disposals, 4 tackles and 1.2 goals per game as a dangerous half forward.
