Every year when the NRL's State of Origin matches come around, the AFL media is awash with potential State of Origin teams for Aussie Rules. And every year fans are asked, do you want it back?

And the majority do want to see it return.

However, the sticking point is often when it can be played in an already busy AFL schedule.

Well AFL legend, Leigh Matthews has a solution.

Matthews says each state should pick State of Origin teams every year, just as the All-Australian team is picked, however, no games should be played.

Matthews says being picked for a representative team of Victoria, South Australia or Western Australia would be considered a prestigious honour for players, regardless of whether or not they actually play a match.

โ€œEvery state association should pick their State of Origin team, because for me playing the games was good, but getting the Victorian jumper โ€” that was the big part of it,โ€ Matthews told Adelaide radio station,ย FIVEaa.

โ€œItโ€™s so simple. The Victorian football league should do it, the West Australian football league should do it.

โ€œSo the 22 players who get selected at least get their state guernsey, which is the greatest thing you can have.โ€
