Melbourne's Lachie Hunter has been fined $1500 by the AFL for unsportsmanlike behaviour after an incident in Round 9's win over Hawthorn.

Vision shows the Demon as he approached the boundary line in the second term while off the ground and "gestured" while a Hawks player had possession of the ball near the wing.

Both Hunter and Melbourne have accepted the league sanction after being issued a please explain from headquarters.

"The AFL advises that Melbourne's Lachie Hunter has been fined $1500 following an incident during the Hawthorn vs Melbourne game in Round Nine," a league statement read.

"During the second quarter, Hunter left the Melbourne interchange area and approached the boundary line outside of the interchange gates, near where a Hawthorn player took possession of the football, where he gestured towards that player.

"Melbourne and Hunter were issued a please explain, with the AFL determining Hunter's actions constituted unsportsmanlike behaviour."
