After it was reported last week The Killers would play at this year's AFL Grand Final, the band themselves confirmed the news on Thursday.

The Killers front man Brandon Flowers confirmed the news while in New York this week, with the band releasing its first single in five years called The Manย on Friday.

Flowers told News Corp Australiaย they would be playing on the biggest stage in Australian sport, and said that while he didn't know a lot about the league, he does know what he can compare it to.

โ€œI can say that weโ€™re going to be playing the AFL game,โ€ Flowers said.

โ€œI donโ€™t know much about AFL, but I know itโ€™s like the Superbowl.โ€

Flowers was then told about the expected crowd figure for the decider, and was surprised to hear the number, before joking that maybe his band wasn't the right choice for such an event.

โ€œThereโ€™ll be 100,000 people there? Holy shit. They should have got Bruno Mars โ€” heโ€™s much better at that sort of thing than me,โ€ Flowers said.

The Killers will play a one-off show in Australia for the grand final on September 30, before returning next year for a tour of the country.

โ€œWeโ€™re excited to go back even if itโ€™s just for a minute [for the Grand Final],โ€ Ronnie Vannucci Jr said, the drummer of The Killers.

โ€œWeโ€™re planning a full-on assault of Australia next year. We love Australia. I could live there.โ€
