Premiership-winning coach John Longmire has chosen not to put his name forward for the vacant North Melbourne coaching role.
Longmire coached Sydney from 2011-24 and took the Swans to five Grand Finals and one premiership before ending his senior coach role and moving into another area at the club at the end of 2024.
Seven is reporting that Longmire, after considering applying for the North Melbourne senior coach role, has opted against it.
The Roos are said to be open to all candidates, but it is believed they would ideally target a first-time coach rather than a second-time coach such as Longmire or Adam Simpson; who also recently pulled out of the race for the job.
North Melbourne has been on the hunt for a senior coach after earlier this month the Roos sacked Alastair Clarkson with a year to go on his contract. A move that shocked the football world after the club's improved performance in 2026.
Given their links to the Kangaroos as former players and both being premiership coaches, Longmire (200 games, 511 goals, one premiership as a player) and Simpson (306 games, two premierships as a player, former captain) were both considered front runners.
Now it seems that the likes of Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham and Geelong assistant Corey Enright lead the pack for the vacant role. Former Collingwood coach and current Geelong assistant Nathan Buckley is believed to still be considering applying for the job.
