Greater Western Sydney have received a boost ahead of the do-or-die semi-final against West Coast on Saturday night, with former No.1 draft pick, Lachie Whitfield re-signing for a further two years.

Whitfield, who was already contracted for 2018, will now remain at the Giants until the end of the 2020 season.

Hawthorn and St Kilda were rumoured to be looking into Whitfield earlier this season, however, the 23-year-old said he always wanted to remain at GWS.

“It was a pretty easy decision really,” Whitfield said.

“This has been my home since I arrived five years ago and this is where I want to play my football.

“I love the Sydney lifestyle and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

“We’re building something special and I’m looking forward to what’s to come in the next few years.”

Whitfield, selected with pick No.1 in the 2012 National Draft, has played 88 games for the club, including 16 this season. He has averaged 24 disposals, six marks, 3.4 tackles and booted 10 goals this year.

Midfielder Josh Kelly and small forward Devon Smith remain the biggest names yet to re-sign with the club beyond this season.
