Collingwood defender Josh Smith will be sidelined for the next week after injuring his left ankle at training on Monday morning.

Smith went down after a marking contest around 30 minutes into the session.

He was helped off the training track and was not seen again for the session.

However, following scans, the club confirmed he has escaped serious injury and is likely to only miss this week's clash with Fremantle.

Smith, who was selected with pick No.25 in the 2015 Rookie Draft, played 18 games in his debut season last year.

He made his on ANZAC Day against Collingwood, collecting 23 disposals, three marks and kicking a goal. The 23-year-old then played every game for the remainder of the season.
