Geelong has told midfielder Josh Cowan he will not be offered a contract for 2018 and beyond, and has been delisted by the Cats.

The 26-year-old has been at the club for the last eight seasons, but could only manage 16 games after his career was decimated by injuries.

Cowan joined the Cats with the 56th pick in the 2009 national draft, but had to wait until round 10, 2011 before making his debut.

Hamstring and Achilles problems were the main injuries that prevented Cowan from playing consistent football.

Geelong's general manager of football Simon Lloyd praised Cowan for his resilience, and thanked him for his work over the past eight years.

“Josh’s great character and resilience held him in high regard with his teammates and coaches over his eight years at Geelong,” Lloyd told geelongcats.com.au.

“Josh has and will continue to be greatly respected by everyone at the club and we wish him all the best for his future endeavours.”

Cowan joins outgoing duo Andrew Mackie and Tom Lonergan on the outs list this season, after the experienced pair announced their retirements last month.
