Izak Rankine's request to be traded to the Adelaide Crows from the Gold Coast Suns is already one of the major talking points ahead of the 2022 AFL trade period.

The 22-year-old announced his desire to return to his home state of South Australia after the Gold Coast Suns season ended, despite the Suns holding a desire to retain the small forward and club Chairman Tony Cochrane publicly lamenting the decision.

The Suns' star has just come off a career-best season, and the No.3 selection in the 2018 draft is starting to prove himself as one of the elite small forwards of the competition.

Recent reports from News Corp claim that Adelaide's first-round draft pick will be required to kickstart this trade. The Crows currently hold pick 5 in the 2022 AFL draft, however, this will slide to pick 6 as the Brisbane Lions will take father-son pick, Will Ashcroft.

The Suns, however, will be looking to the 2023 AFL draft, with highly rated Gold Coast Sun's academy player Jed Walter eligible for that draft.

Walter is a strong-marking teenager who is being touted as a top 10 future draft pick and kicked 9 goals in 4 games in the National under 19 championships for the Allies.

This will probably lead to the Sun's requesting future picks from the Crows in exchange for Rankine, so they can match any potential bids for Walter at next year's draft night.

The AFL 2022 trade period kicks off on Monday the 3rd of October.
