Inaugural Cat Danielle Higgins has called time on her AFLW career, ending a six-year stint at Kardinia Park.

Higgins, who has played 24 games in the top flight, joined Geelong through their VFLW system when the Cats first joined the league.

The 31-year-old has made just the one appearance for Dan Lowther's side this season, however is set to continue to ply her trade in the VFLW until the end of the 2022 season before hanging up the boots.

Higgins expressed her pride to pull on the hoops across both levels, with the Cattery becoming a second home for the Hamlyn Heights product.

“I just want to say thank you to Geelong Footy Club for giving me this opportunity, and thank you to my family for their endless support,” Higgins told teammates this week.

“I said, ‘I’ll play one year’, and two VFLW years later and four AFLW, I’m just so honoured to have worn the Hoops.

“I grew up as a Geelong supporter, sitting out there with Dad in the Past Players (Stand) and with my brothers and sister, watching footy.

“To just think that I’ve had this opportunity to represent my hometown is pretty amazing, and being a Geelong supporter (made it even more special).

“It’s a massive honour, and I just want to say thank you. Being part of the inaugural VFLW and AFLW teams is something I will always cherish.

“The main thing I’ll remember is the friendships. It’s fun kicking the footy around and it’s good to play that first game, but all my best memories are probably away from the field, and the friendships I’ve created, lifelong friendships.

“I’m looking forward to cheering our team on from the sidelines. I’m excited to watch the growth and development of our current players and the new players that will wear the Hoops. We are building something special, we have some very talented players and we are only going to get better and better.”

Higgins could conclude her AFLW career with the Cats' senior side this week when they host the Giants on Friday night, while Geelong's VFLW side will face Casey on Saturday.
