Victoria coach Chris Scott has provided an update on Jacob Weitering following the Carlton key defender's injury during the return of AFL Origin on Saturday.

Weitering was unable to last the opening term of Saturday's AFL Origin clash between Victoria and Western Australia, suffering rib and shoulder injuries that forced a lengthy delay in play.

Weitering was stretchered from the field following a marking contest at half-back involving his Victoria teammate Sam Collins and WA's Mitch Georgiades.

"Our understanding is that it's serious enough that you need to be updated on it, and he's going to miss a period of time," Scott said.

"But I wouldn't like to say anything more than that out of respect for Carlton."

Geirgiades's left arm landed high on Weitering as the pair fell to the ground, with the latter immediately grimacing on the surface.

Play was stopped for a prolonged period as the medicab made its way onto the field to assist Weitering to the sidelines and into the rooms.

It was later confirmed that Weitering, who was taken to hospital as a precaution, was undergoing treatment for concerns relating to his ribs and shoulder.

Carlton is due to play a match simulation session against Brisbane on Wednesday prior to its Community Series clash with Geelong a week later.

The Blues' season opener is scheduled for Thursday, March 5 against Sydney at the SCG, 19 days after AFL Origin
