The Tasmania Devils wanted someone to get low down and dirty, gumboots and all.
That is why it had to be "Camperdown Kenny'', the man from deep in Victoria's dairy-farming western district.
Ken Hinkley hasn't lost his country charm and the Devils needed an everywhere man, capable of mixing it with heavy-hitters in board rooms and talking to locals over a bag of steamed dim sims.
In year one, he will be the pied piper, selling hope across the state and visiting suburban and bush matches - men's, women's and juniors. That suits "Camperdown Kenny" perfectly.
Devils CEO Brendon Gale was pointed when he backed up revelations earlier on Monday on Zero Hanger's Six Points that Hinkley's edge was very much community based.
Gale talked up Hinkley's ability to tap into the "local eco-system" - in other words, grass roots community.
As sharp as Nathan Buckley is (and there is little doubt he will get another crack at a senior job), Hinkley is more the natural "everyman", the guy who can roll up to Burnie or Queenstown and immediately fit in.
Hinkley himself at the presser reminded everybody that he had coached community clubs across his journey, cutting his teeth at Geelong under Mark Thompson in very much a country-like community. Very Tasmanian.
"I'm now a Tasmanian," Hinkley said.
He revealed his first spoke to Gale 18 months ago about Tasmania opportunities, and has had his eye on it for some time, excited by recent Devils crowds in the VFL.
Devils chairman Grant O'Brien mentioned the three Cs that were the pillar of Hinkley's presentation ... Culture, Care and Connection.
Again, that is "Camperdown Kenny" - the ability to relate to all, connect, sell hope and retain talent.
The Devils are adamant Hinkley is a "relationship coach" and "perhaps the finest in the AFL" at building them.
It is a five-year deal, but Hinkley, at 59, is in no mood to plan a hand over after that just yet.
"Don't put any limits on me," Hinkley said.
He's ready to get low down and dirty, boots and all.
