Carlton veteran George Hewett is attempting to add a new string to his bow in a bid to return to the senior side.

In his latest VFL outing, Hewett spent a large chunk of his time forward of the ball to facilitate father-son gun Cody Walker.

"George had another strong performance in our midfield, while he also played forward," reserves coach Damien Truslove said.

"He played about 40 percent of the game forward, and it was good to have a look at him there: he hit the scoreboard and his stuff as a midfielder around stoppages was strong again, tough and hard at the ball."

Hewett recorded 31 possessions and kicked two goals, but laid considerably less tackles (two) than most weeks, while he doubled his marks (12) from the previous week in the VFL.

The change in role comes as the former Swan has spent the last month in the reserves since he was dropped from Michael Voss' line-up following the Good Friday clash against North Melbourne.

Hewett, according to the stats, produced a strong game, but the Blues wanted more speed around the ball, whilst Voss has favoured captain Patrick Cripps and Adam Cerra inside the centre square.

Jagga Smith, Sam Walsh and Zac Williams have all increased their midfield loads, while Lachlan Cowan, who spent time on St Kilda's Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera during last week's clash, also bumped up his centre ball-up attendances.

Voss has used recruits Ollie Florent and Ben Ainsworth at times to help increase speed.

Hewett's three games in the VFL have been nothing short of impressive, but his new role may give Voss something to consider.

His time in the reserves has frustrations brewing behind the scenes, with reports indicating that he could consider a fresh start, despite being contracted until the end of next year.
