Former AFL star Brendon Goddard believes GWS' midfield is the strongest in the competition, with Richmond's premiership-winning engine room ranked as fourth in the AFL.

In an article penned on the Herald Sun's website, Goddard has ranked every midfield group across the league from 1-18, with Josh Kelly, Lachie Whitfield, Tim Taranto and Stephen Coniglio the leaders of the best midfield of the league.

Callan Ward played just four games in 2019, and the grand finalists will be buoyed by his return next season.

"The Giantsโ€™ depth of A-Grade talent is simply outrageous and they were ranked No. 1 for clearances last season despite not having a dominant ruckman," Goddard wrote.

"The return of co-captain Ward from an ACL injury only further bolsters the midfield stocks, while Kelly could well take another step forward into the very top echelon of midfielders in the competition with a full pre-season under his belt."

The top four midfields according to Goddard are the Giants, West Coast, Collingwood and Richmond.
