Geelong football boss Andrew Mackie has turned down significant interest from Tasmania to remain at Kardinia Park.

The Devils are hunting for their own general manager of football and believe Mackie is the perfect fit as they continue to build out the role.

Mackie addressed the interest from the AFL's newest side last month, which is preparing to enter the competition in 2028, but ultimately opted against moving to the Apple Isle according to multiple reports.

“Just when the dust settles on all this stuff … just have a good think,” he said in October.

“I have a family of six which you need to think about, but this (Geelong) is a special place, a special footy club and with special people.”

Tasmania added Geelong man Nigel Lappin as its head of development, a massive coup after the premiership Lion spent his coaching career at the Cats.

"It's rare to build a club from the ground up,” Lappin said in August.

“To lead the development function from the start is unique opportunity to shape something very special.

"Tasmania has an incredible football history and passion for the game.

“To now have the opportunity to help shape its AFL future is something I feel incredibly privileged to be part of.

"Development isn't just about making better footballers; it's about building better people, creating strong habits and establishing a culture that lasts.

“That's what excites me most about this role."

The Devils also welcomed former Cat George Stevens to their playing list for 2027 in the VFL, with the hope the midfielder can earn an AFL reprieve after he was delisted.

Mackie's decision to remain at Geelong comes after a busy trade and free agency period for the club, reiterating its stance in pursuing more silverware under Chris Scott.

The Cats welcomed Toby Greene, Rowan Marshall and Jordan Ridley, whilst maintaining the strong core at Kardinia Park.

They were also in the hunt for Zak Butters, but lost the race to the Western Bulldogs.

Geelong will open its 2027 season against Sydney at the SCG on Wednesday, March 17.

The Cats also received primetime love, earning six slots in the opening 16 Rounds.
