Geelong recruit Toby Greene is set to wear No.1 at the Cats after it was vacated by premiership ruckman Rhys Stanley.

Greene crossed to the Kardinia Park club after 15 years with the Giants, opting to exercise his free agency rights and return to Victoria as he prepares for his next stage in life with a young family.

The former GWS skipper will reunite with great mate and gun forward Jeremy Cameron at Geelong, with the pair set to produce a formidable duo in Chris Scott's forward line.

"I think I'm number one," he said on Triple M.

"I've gone early on it, but I've tried to sort of claim it. So I hope I do get it. It's a small forward number. I'm looking forward to it.

"I think I wore it in Origin. That would be good."

Greene wore the No.1 in the 2026 Origin clash between Victoria and Western Australia. He kicked 2.2 from 18 touches, 11 marks, 10 score involvements and five inside 50s.

The Cats have a host of new numbers they could fill.

Stanley spent 12 seasons in the No.1 after he moved from St Kilda. He played 172 games, slotting 75 goals and featured in the 2022 premiership side.

The No.1 also belonged to Steve Hocking (1984-1994; 199 games), Steven King (1996-2007; 193 games) and Wayne Closter (1964-1975; 191 games).

Greene isn't the only one in search of a new locker, with fellow recruits Rowan Marshall and Jordan Ridley set for fresh starts after they departed St Kilda and Essendon during the trade period.

Along with Stanley, the Cats farewelled Jed Bews (delisted), Jack Bowes (trade, Essendon), Mitch Knevitt (delisted), Jake Kolodjashnij (retired), Keighton Matofai-Forbes (delisted), Tyson Stengle (delisted) and George Stevens (delisted).
