Geelong are said to be on the verge of agreeing to a new multi-year contract extension for premiership coach Chris Scott which would take the club's longest-serving coach into a 16th season.

Scott's current contract isn't set to expire until the end of next year, with the former Brisbane Bears and Lions player one of several current senior coaches set to enter the final year of their deals come 2024.

Melbourne's Simon Goodwin, Carlton's Michael Voss, Adelaide's Matthew Nicks and Fremantle's Justin Longmuir join the Cats coach in being off-contract come next year, with Geelong making an early move to sew up their coach's future.

According to 7 News Melbourne, Geelong are on the verge of locking away Scott's signature for a further two years, with an agreement set to be in place in the coming days.

The extension would see Scott signed at Kardinia Park until the end of the 2026 season, a run that will have the two-time premiership-winning coach edge closer to another milestone.

Geelong's Round 21 win over Port Adelaide saw Scott surpass club icon Reg Hickey's long-standing record for most games as coach of the Cats, with Scott's 305th match seeing him surpass Hickey's tally that has stood since 1959.

Scott currently sits equal 22nd for all-time games coached in VFL/AFL history, with this weekend's encounter against St Kilda set to see the 47-year-old go past former Richmond coach Damien Hardwick.

With a further three years to come with the Cats, Scott is in line to go past the 350-game barrier and could be among the top 15 most experienced coaches by the end of the 2026 season.

Only Alastair Clarkson (401 games) and Ross Lyon (326) have coached more games than Scott among the current crop of mentors.

Scott has the greatest win rate of any coach that has led a side in more than 80 matches, having won 210 of his 307 games in charge of Geelong - seeing him sit 15th all-time for matches won as a senior coach in the competition's history.

Geelong remain in the finals hunt with two matches remaining in the current home and away season, with games against fellow finals aspirants St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs to come this weekend and next respectively.
