1. Sometimes it's no fun being a North supporter

What more can be said. North Melbourne have been playing some great football, yet are now 0-5. Is there anything more annoying for a supporter than having your hopes lifted only to be bought thundering down at the end of a game?

This is the Roos' third loss by less than a goal to start this year. Their supporters are starting to get unwanted flashbacks to 2013. In that year North Melbourne lost six games by 10 points or less, and five of those were decided by less than a goal.

It's rough going for the Roos and their supporters. They are in a position were they could quite easily be 3-2, and sitting in the top eight. Hopefully next week will the be the week they get onto the winners list, they deserve it.

2. West Coast really hate the MCG

We thought we knew it, but now we really do. The Eagles had a great chance to prove their doubters wrong in their game against the Hawks this week. Their opposition were down, slumping to 0-4 the round before. But West Coast let their chance slip.

The Eagles have now lost an incredible 12 of their past 16 games on the hallowed MCG turf. Much has been said about the West Australian team being 'flat-track bullies', and the statistics would all but prove this idea.

3. Joel Selwood is alright at football

Alright, yes this one was pretty obvious, and has been for a while now, but Selwood's game on Sunday was exceptional. The Geelong captain collected 43 disposals, took 8 marks, laid 9 tackles, had 9 clearances and kicked a goal. Not bad.

Not only that, he also led his side to the victory. Early in the 4th quarter the game was there to be won. Enter Selwood, who did what he has done for years now, he took the game by the scruff of the neck and helped his side to an emphatic win.

4. Hawthorn is still missing that next generation

It was a great win for Hawthorn on the weekend. However, apart from Tom Mitchell, it was once again the same group of players who did the bulk of the work.

Ben McEvoy had 43 hit-outs, Jack Gunston and Luke Breust both kicked 3 goals, and Shaun Burgoyne, Cyril Rioli, and Luke Hodge were back at their brilliant best. But it is the next generation of players who need to stand up or else the Hawks' fall from grace will get worse.

Will Langford, Daniel Howe, Kaiden Brand, and others, have all shown promise. It is time for players such as these to make the jump to an above average level. This is especially important as in the past few years the Hawks have traded away many draft picks, and thus have only been able to select from some of the lesser talent in previous drafts.

5. Sydney will not make the finals

The call has been made. Earlier in the season the poor performances were put to players being out injured and so on. However in round five we saw the return of Gary Rohan, Isaac Heeney, and Kurt Tippett. These returns did little to stop Sydney's poor form.

Looking ahead to some of their bigger games, the Swans are still to play; GWS and the Bulldogs again, St Kilda and Hawthorn twice, and Richmond, Geelong, and Adelaide. These all loom as tough match-ups, with no win guaranteed.

You would have to think the Swans chances to play after round 23 is very unlikely. Which could provide the backing for some big changes in the Harbour City.
