1. We should try overtime in regular season games
Geelong and Giants' fans were left drained and disappointed after their teams shared the points on Saturday night. The draw happens maybe once a year, and thus it isn't a hugely pressing matter, but perhaps it's time to try overtime in regular season games.
Whether it be five minutes or more, you would get a winner, and fans would get to watch some extra football. The tension of an overtime period is riveting in other sports and would no doubt be the same in AFL. It's not to say we keep overtime forever, but it may be worth a try.
2. The Bombers aren't as far along as we thought
Midway through the season it seemed as though Essendon were going to play finals footy. Their senior players had returned with good form, while their youngsters seemed to have relished a year of games in 2016.
But now the Dons are slipping down the ladder, having lost four of their past five games. The loss to Brisbane on the weekend really drove the message across. At Etihad and with a lead heading into the fourth, the Bombers took the foot off the gas and were punished for it.
John Worsfold's men are still a chance to play finals, although they will have to come from further back than expected. But it would seem they aren't as far along as we first thought.
3. Patrick Dangerfield is in a league of his own
If you were unsure whether Patrick Dangerfield was the best player in the game or not, his effort against the Giants proved that he is without a doubt. Without his running mate Joel Selwood, he went to another level against arguably the best side in the competition.
The reigning Brownlow Medallist finished with 45 disposals, 25 of which were contested, and a goal. His kicking efficiency was over 70%, and he had 13 clearances.
He almost carried the Cats over the line in round 15 and it won't be the last time it happens either. Everyone knows he is a star, but his performance against GWS makes him the clear cut number one player in the competition.
4. Port Adelaide needs to dish up good performances against good sides
The Power currently sit fifth on the ladder and really should make finals. However, if you look back at there form, it isn't all that convincing.
When Port Adelaide have played sides who sit in the top eight at the time of the match this season, their record is 0-5. That record must be a major concern for Ken Hinkley and his staff heading into the back end of the season.
If we are to believe Port are any real threat of causing havoc in September they need to start beating better opposition. They will have a chance this week against the Eagles.
5. Calls on Tom Bugg's career are ridiculous
Tom Bugg's hit on Callum Mills was an ugly incident. It is a shocking look for the game and there is no doubt he will receive a lengthy suspension that reflects that. However, some footy experts came out and suggested that due to his form and in part the act, he may have played his last AFL game ever.
Bugg hasn't set the world on fire this season, but has no doubt been serviceable. For the likes of Tadhg Kennelly to suggest that he may never play another game of senior AFL football is a bit much. It may be the last time we see him in 2017, with several Dees players set to return from injury, but it's very doubtful that it will be the last time we see him ever.
