Umpire Eleni Glouftsis is set to make history in this Sunday’s NAB Challenge match between Carlton and Essendon at Ikon Park.

Glouftsis will become the first ever female field umpire to adjudicate an AFL match.

The rookie-listed umpire, who was the first female field umpire to adjudicate a VFL match last year, is one of 12 rookie umpires for 2016, meaning she will be an emergency umpire and could officiate a home and away game should an on-field umpire sustain an injury.

“We’re really happy to say that Eleni will now make her NAB Cup debut this week,”AFL umpires head coach Hayden Kennedy told

“It’s a great step forward in her development but also for umpiring development as a community. It’s fantastic.”

  1. why the Essendon game this is just to boost the Bombers profile surely she can umpire another game that will boost her pofile , putting her on the field with a drug cheating club for her first game na smells like they put her there so people will watch the bombers why couldn’t she umpire a interstate game , then the two Essendon fans can watch the bombers in peace !!!!! 😉
