Umpire Eleni Glouftsis is set to make history in this Sunday's NAB Challenge match between Carlton and Essendon at Ikon Park.

Glouftsis will become the first ever female field umpire to adjudicate an AFL match.

The rookie-listed umpire, who was the first female field umpire to adjudicate a VFL match last year, is one of 12 rookie umpires for 2016, meaning she will be an emergency umpire and could officiate a home and away game should an on-field umpire sustain an injury.

"We're really happy to say that Eleni will now make her NAB Cup debut this week,"AFL umpires head coach Hayden Kennedy told AFL.com.au.

"It's a great step forward in her development but also for umpiring development as a community. It's fantastic."
