Essendon legend and current Seven News sports reader Tim Watson claims that their may be a female senior coach in the AFL in the near future.

"Right now I would say it’s a strong possibility within the next decade that we will see a woman coaching in the AFL as a senior coach," Watson told SEN Breakfast.

"I would’ve thought five years ago the possibility of seeing a woman coach in the AFL was next to zero."

St Kilda may have been the club that has changed Watsons mind. They are the first AFL club to feature a female in a high coaching position

Enter, Peta Searle who features as an assistant coach for the Saints. Her stellar resume also features the assistant job at Port Melbourne under former Geelong and Adelaide coach Gary Ayers.

The AFLW also features two female senior coaches, with both Bec Goddard and Michelle Cowan at Adelaide and Fremantle respectively.

Female personalities have come a long way in the AFL. From positions on the commentary team and generally football related media.

Spearheaded by controversial AFL reporter Caroline Wilson, the first woman to win the AFL's gold media award in 1989.

The commencement of the AFLW has cemented the place for women in the AFL and Australian Rules Football in general.

A senior coaching position, held by a female will only further legitimise their role in the AFL as a whole.
