St Kilda have turned the tables on a prominent AFL reporter as they near their appointment of former senior coach Ross Lyon.

Lyon has been door-stopped outside of RSEA Park several times this week, offering the media some insight into where things stand between him and the club as the Saints close in on naming a successor for sacked coach Brett Ratten.

7 News journalist Tom Browne has been at Moorabbin on four successive days this week to cover Lyon's seemingly imminent appointment, giving St Kilda's own media team a chance to post a cheeky dig at the reporter.

On Thursday night the club's Twitter account uploaded footage of Browne working the phones while nearby the club, dropping an "exclusive" of their own.

Browne responded to the Tweet, calling on the Saints to announce Lyon's appointment.

“This is gold… and old!” Browne commented.

“I'm in the office. Ross will be the the coach, just announce it already. Old news!”

St Kilda and Lyon are "very close" to reaching an agreement to reunite from 2023, with the 55-year-old set to return to the club for the first time since his departure in 2011.
