Every AFL club's squad for the 2027 season is coming together, so how does each team's back, midfield and forward line stack up with their rivals?

We at Zero Hanger will be going through all 18 clubs analysing and ranking them 1-18 across all three thirds of the ground, starting with the backline.

While the draft, delisted free agent signing period and trial spots remain for clubs to recruit players, the majority of each team's starting 23 are in place.

Focusing on the players at their disposal, their style of football in 2026, and with a look forward to Round 1, 2027, this is how we ranked every club 1-18 for its defence.

Defenders: Jordon Butts, James O'Donnell, Buku Khamis, Rory Lobb, Bailey Dale, Lachie Carmichael, Jedd Busslinger, Lachie Jaques, Connor Budarick, Lachie Bramble, Luke Cleary, Michael Sellwood

How the Bulldogs perform defensively in 2027 will be an intriguing watch.

The Dogs certainly needed another key defender this season and by acquiring the reliable Jordon Butts that will help make a difference.

It will allow Buku Khamis to not rely on being a one-on-one defender, in which he struggles, and let him get back to his best as an intercepting third tall.

James O'Donnell is growing with each game and is close to being a star of the league. While Bailey Dale is equal with Nick Blakey, Jarman Impey and Jordan Clark as the best halfback flankers in the competition.

The Dogs are similar to the Lions and Demons school of thought in win by attacking. And with Sam Darcy in the forward line, why wouldn't you?

Role players Michael Sellwood, Rory Lobb and Connor Budarick will be important for a deep September run.
