Every AFL club's squad for the 2027 season is coming together, so how does each team's back, midfield and forward line stack up with their rivals?
We at Zero Hanger will be going through all 18 clubs analysing and ranking them 1-18 across all three thirds of the ground, starting with the backline.
While the draft, delisted free agent signing period and trial spots remain for clubs to recruit players, the majority of each team's starting 23 are in place.
Focusing on the players at their disposal, their style of football in 2026, and with a look forward to Round 1, 2027, this is how we ranked every club 1-18 for its defence.
11. GWS

Defenders: Lachie Ash, Sam Taylor, Harrison Oliver, Jayden Laverde, Harrison Himmelberg, James Leake, Toby McMullin, Joe Fonti, Oskar Taylor, Connor Idun, Jack Buckley, Finnegan Davis
The Giants have cut a lot of aged talent and experience from their list for 2027. And while many think they will fall down the ladder, GWS is not buying that story.
The Orange Tsunami had a tough year on the injury front, but still showed signs of what they are capable of such as an 86-point quarter against eventual premiers Brisbane.
In terms of defence; if GWS' list stays healthy it remains full of quality. But if there are more injuries; trouble.
Sam Taylor at full health is pushing to be the best key defender in the league. Connor Idun remains an underrated star and leader at the club, while Lachie Ash has firmly put himself into the conversation as one of the league's best defenders.
Then come the likes of Joe Fonti, Jack Buckley and James Leake to fill the gaps.
GWS has said it is backing in its youth next season with a plethora of top 25 draft picks in recent years. Expect a high-pressure run-and-gun out of defence style of play from the Giants next season.
