Former Bomber Matthew Lloyd has said that the Essendon's pursuit of forward Sam Weideman is "worth the risk" if the club isn't giving up too much to bring him in.

The 25-year-old Demon is set to head across town for a reported future third-round pick, per The Age, after playing just ten games for Melbourne this season.

Weideman made his debut in 2016 after being selected with pick nine in the 2015 AFL National Draft, going on to play 59 games for the club.

Speaking on AFL Trade Radio, Lloyd admitted that the Bombers don't have much to lose by bringing in Weideman.

“If you're getting him for not much, there's nothing to lose,” Lloyd said.

“I said he has to get out Weideman, he has to move. He has to walk into his manager's office and the club and say: ‘I need out of here. If you're playing Mitch Brown ahead of me, I need to move on because you don't have the faith in me.'

“You'd think it'd be for a third-rounder – you wouldn't give anything more than that – and it's worth the risk on him.

“But he's got to get more competitive and nastier. If he doesn't take the mark he's poor at ground level.

“He rucked in the grand final at VFL level, he fought pretty hard in wet conditions. But then when he comes up to the AFL level, he lacks confidence, and that may be because he's always in and out.

“He's got talent but he hasn't had the fight at AFL level to prosper consistently.

“The interesting thing is they've got Harrison Jones, who will play a fair bit, and is Weideman similar in a sense that they're that number three type forward?”

Day six of the 2022 AFL Trade Period is currently underway, with the period set to wrap up at 7:30pm AEST on Wednesday, October 12.
