Clay Smith has signed a one-year contract extension with the Western Bulldogs.

Smith, who recovered from three knee reconstructions to play a starring role in the Bulldogs' final series, played 13 games this season, including the Grand Final.

"To be a premiership player with a great bunch of people, and then sign an extension, I can't think of a more happier time in football," Smith told the club's website.

"My challenges have been well-documented, but it makes it all worthwhile when get to experience what we have over the past few weeks. I'm just rapt."

Smith has played a total of 47 games since being recruited with pick No.17 in the 2011 AFL Draft.
