Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has confirmed the Magpies are "absolutely committed" to new recruit Chris Mayne, despite the forward's rocky start to his Collingwood career.

The 28-year-old was signed as a free agent at the end of last season, on a deal reportedly worth around $2 million over four years.

Mayne played the first three matches of the 2017 season but only managed two goals, and was dropped back to the VFL after a goalless performance in Collingwood's win over Sydney in Round 3.

The former Docker has also struggled in the reserves, with just nine goals to his name from seven matches.

“Mayne’s not going as well as we thought he might, he’s taking longer to settle,” Buckley told Channel 9’s Footy Classified on Monday night.

“I’m coaching Mayney the same way I’m coaching every other player on the list to try and get the best out of them.

“We’re absolutely committed to Chris Mayne and finding out what his best football can be. He’ll have a say in that and the quality of football and the player he’s competing against for the same position will have a say in that.”

Mayne played 172 games for Fremantle between 2008-2016 and kicked 196 goals during his time with the Dockers.
