Hawthorn midfielder Tom Mitchell has reportedly been taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg, according to AFL.com.au's Mitch Cleary.

Mitchell dominated the 2018 season and averaged 35.3 disposals, 8.0 clearances and 6.3 tackles per game.

โ€œFor Tom to suffer an injury like this is incredibly disappointing for both him and our footy club,โ€ Hawthorn's GM of Football Graham Wright told the club's website.

โ€œHe will undergo surgery over the weekend and as a result will most likely miss the 2019 season.

โ€œHowever, Tom is a very resilient young man and we have no doubt that he will tackle his rehab with the same professionalism and diligence with which he approaches his training.โ€
