Essendon have re-signed talented midfielder Nic Martin to a new two-year deal, keeping the recruit at Tullamarine until the end of 2024 following his great start to the season.

Martin has been a shining light in the Bombers' poor start to the season, since being overlooked at the National Draft for three years and picked up by the Bombers in the Supplementary Selection Period in February.

The 21-year-old booted five goals and had 27 disposals on debut, and hasn't looked back since.

His impressive debut performance earned him a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination, and would be a leading contender for the award, currently averaging 22.2 disposals and 1.3 goals per game.

Hailing from Subiaco, Martin has played every game bar Round 2 due to health and safety protocols, and has quickly cemented his spot in the Bombers' best 22, impressing Ben Rutten and his coaching staff.

The club are yet to lock away midfielder Andrew McGrath to the Hangar, whilst high draftees in Nik Cox, Archie Perkins and Zach Reid are others that remain uncontracted beyond 2022, which will be of the Bombers' main priorities moving forward.

McGrath is understood to be putting contract talks on hold until season's end, which may cause some dilemma for the Bombers' planning.
