The AFL is set to follow up with North Melbourne after Jed Anderson returned to the field during Saturday's loss to Adelaide before subsequently being ruled out with concussion.

Anderson required the assistance of trainers after a heavy collision during the third term and went to the bench under the blood rule. Despite copping a knock to the head, Anderson returned to the field minutes later.

The 28-year-old Roo was then taken from the game at three quarter time due to concussion, with the Herald Sun reporting that it was a concussion spotter within the AFL's ARC that noticed Anderson stumbling after the incident and alerted club doctors.

Under AFL protocols, any players suspected of having sustained a concussion are required to undergo a 15-minute concussion test.

Speaking after the match, North Melbourne interim coach Leigh Adams said he was confident that protocols were followed correctly by North staff.

“I haven’t seen the vision yet, but I’m comfortable that our doctors would have made the right decision whatever that was,” Adams said.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure, I know he came off with the blood rule, and then I was told at three-quarter time that he had gone into the concussion protocols.

“I’m not sure how long he was in those protocols once the three-quarter time siren went but he was ruled out pretty quickly after that.”

Under the league's concussion protocols, Anderson will now miss North Melbourne's final game of the season against Gold Coast.

North are not expected to receive any sanction as a result of the incident, per the Herald Sun.
