AFL legend and four-time premiership-winning coach Leigh Matthews has called for Fremantle stars Murphy Reid and Josh Treacy to respond after a run of poor performances in finals.
Treacy has kicked one goal in the Dockers' three finals, while Reid's impact, decision making and disposal efficiency have fallen away dramatically.
The pair both earned their maiden All-Australian blazers this season, with Reid incredibly achieving the feat in his second season. However, they have both been slammed back to reality by the pressure and ferocity of finals football.
Speaking on 3AW's Saturday broadcast, Matthews said it was up to the coaches to boost their star players' confidence, which will be crucial if Fremantle is to go all the way and win its first premiership.
"The big thing for me with Freo, two of their big guns in Josh Treacy and Murphy Reid just aren't going," Matthews said.
"Now that coaching challenge this week, because in the end (Luke) Jackson was good, (Shai) Bolton was good, (Andrew) Brayshaw was good, (Hayden) Young, (Caleb) Serong, they sort of got them going.
"But two of their All-Australians and weapons Murphy Reid and Josh Treacy have had a poor finals series really and it will be a great challenge, for them and the coaches around them, to get them up.
"Because they are going to jump on Murphy Reid this week because there were a couple of times he didn't go when he probably should have gone. Because they are both overthinking.
"That's the problem. When you are not playing well you start thinking too much and stop doing. The old John Kennedy line: Do, don't think."
Matthews won four premierships as a player for Hawthorn. He then won a further four as a coach at Collingwood and then Brisbane, and is in the conversation as the greatest player of all time.
Leaning on his years of experience at the helm of ultra-successful football clubs, Matthews gave Fremantle's coaching staff some advice.
"I think what you would be doing with both Murphy Reid and Josh Treacy is plenty of positive reinforcement and vision," he said.
"Forget what happened yesterday and these couple of games, you've got to get them feeling good about themselves by just reminding them what they have done for most of the year. Because their last few weeks have just been below par.
"(Reid) hasn't handled the occasion and that is very obvious because you can see it with your eyes. But you have to be careful, you can't jump on them.
"He is going to get jumped on Murphy Reid for not going hard enough and that kind of stuff, but it's about doing not thinking."
The star Dockers pair will have one more opportunity to respond and play their role when Fremantle takes on either Hawthorn or Brisbane in the Grand Final next Saturday.
