The AFL has confirmed that crowds through Rounds 1-9 are the highest they've ever been, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 by 33,275 attendees. The average crowd so far this season is 37,620 with a total of 3,047,247 in attendance across the first 81 games.

The entirety of the top 10 has had a minimum crowd attendance of 65,000.

Here's how the averages shape up across the country...

Western Australia

Despite West Coast's struggles, Optus Stadium is averaging 43,509 attendees, which is a 29% increase from last year. The Fremantle faithful continue to support their side as they gradually find some form.

South Australia

The success of Adelaide and Port Adelaide has seen a 24% increase in attendance at Adelaide Oval, averaging 37,633. With both teams playing exciting brands of footy, it isn't hard to see why there's an increase.

It is important to note that Adelaide Oval's attendance averages may be skewed due to Gather Round.

Biggest crowd: 48,962 (Round 3, Port Adelaide vs Adelaide, Adelaide Oval)

Queensland

The Gabba has seen a 25% increase in spectators, resulting in an average of 30,260, namely because of Brisbane's premiership aspirations.

The home of the Gold Coast Suns, Heritage Bank Stadium, is averaging 11,971, an increase of 10%. Thankfully for the Suns, they seem to be continuing to grow both on and off-field simultaneously.

New South Wales

GIANTS Stadium and the SCG's crowd numbers have increased by 40% and 18% respectively.

The Swan's home crowd average rose to 32,320 whilst GWS sits at the bottom of the attendance list with an average of 8,930. Sydney's Grand Final appearance in 2022 has seemed to entice more fans to attend. Similarly to the Suns, the Giants continue to grow in their 14th season.

Victoria

It comes as no surprise that the MCG has the highest attendance average at 61,910 spectators, a 31% increase from 2022. Comparatively, Marvel Stadium has only had a 7% increase from last year, averaging 31,951.

The top 10 attended matches of 2023 have all taken place at the MCG, with the Anzac Day clash between Collingwood and Essendon leading the charge with a record 95,179 in attendance to watch an instant classic.

With Sir Doug Nicholls Round approaching, it seems attendance records will continue to be broken. Dreamtime at the 'G between Essendon and Richmond on Saturday night is sure to see a big crowd. Sunday afternoon will be host to rivals Carlton and Collingwood with an expected crowd of 80,000 plus.
