West Coast have been urged to extend emerging swingman Jobe Shanahan beyond his current deal.

Shanahan continues to take impressive strides in the AFL during his second season at the top flight and was already rewarded with a two-year extension at the end of last year until the end of 2028.

But after another elite performance, Western Australian journalist Digby Beacham, speaking on Zero Hanger's The Outer Wing, powered by TabTouch, has implored the Eagles to lock away the Victorian native.

"He's a young man from (Victoria)," Beacham said.

"He's already extended once, contracted until the end of 2028. If I'm West Coast's list management team, I'd be going to his agent and say, "Right, what are you looking for? What do you want?' Because we want to have this young man at our football club for the next decade.

"I would've thought Jobe Shanahan is very comfortable (in Perth). I know for a fact he really likes living in Western Australia. He loves the lifestyle here in Perth.

"I would've thought it's a pretty easy deal to get done. I would've thought it's one; if they're not working on it already, they'd be negligent in not doing so.

"You need to find a way to ensure that Jobe Shanahan stays at your football club long term."

Beacham and co-host Mark Stevens discussed Eagles coach Andrew McQualter's future.

In his second year in charge, McQualter has registered five wins, four of which have come this year.

The former St Kilda player is contracted until the end of 2027.

"It's an interesting one," Beacham said.

"I can see both sides of the argument here. You can mount an argument if you don't want to give Andrew an extension now, you say, 'Who's going to pinch him? Is he going to be in the crosshairs of Carlton, Essendon or a Tasmania? And the answer is probably no. So people will say, 'What's the rush?'

"Conversely, look at what he's been able to do, and the list he's inherited; it was a train wreck of a list thanks to Adam Simpson. They won one game last year, and a fair way off the pace. But this year, they've taken a quantum leap forward.

"They've won four games this year. They could've won another couple, and they could be in the conversation for the Wildcard spot. And I know there's a lot of coulds in there, but this is a side which is still missing top-end talent; they're battling injuries.

"For them to work their way to four wins already at the halfway mark of the season is a huge tick in Andrew McQualter's coaching and what he's trying to implement.

"For mine, I think he's now in that space he's deserving of a contract extension."

Stevens believes 'Mini' McQualter should "sit and wait" until this time next year.
