New Port Adelaide recruit Jack Watts believes the Power are closer to winning a premiership than his former club.

Watts, who was unceremoniously traded by the Demons at the end of the season, is yet to play a finals match in his nine seasons in the AFL.

But the former No.1 draft is confident that drought will end in 2018 after three weeks at pre-season training.

"You know who I think is (closer to a premiership), that's why I'm here," Watts said on Monday.

"It's pretty exciting coming in with the names at this club at the moment, then you add Rockliff and Steve Motlop, it's pretty exciting if we can keep everyone out on the park.

"It's about having that even team contribution.

"You're not going to need one or two players to have 35 (disposals) and Charlie (Dixon) to kick five goals a game.

"We're going to have a really even contribution across the board and we should have a really successful year."

While Watts' role was sometimes varied at the Dees, he says he expects to play as a high half forward at his new club.

"I'd love to really lock down that spot up forward, but at the same time, if the team needs me to go up the ground a bit, or play on the wing or play as a tall mid, I'm certainly up for anything that we need," Watts said.

"Ideally, I'll kick a lot of goals and put a lot of ball down Charlie's throat and help in that aspect of the game."

Watts played 153 games with Melbourne, before being traded in exchange for pick No.31.
