A pair of local football finals controversies has rocked Victorian clubs St Joseph's and Wonthaggi denied wins in crucial moments.

In the Geelong Football Netball League (GNFL), St Joseph's elimination final loss to Bell Park ended dramatically, with the Joeys denied a goal in the final seconds of the match.

Trailing by three points, St Joseph's perfected a chain of handballs, and ended with Liam Kershaw running into an open goal to secure the victory.

However, the goal umpire immediately called a behind as Kershaw slammed the ball through the big sticks, indicating he'd kicked the footy over the line. St Joseph's were awarded a behind.

The live match feed made it hard for viewers to determine whether the call was correct, but Geelong great and elimination final matchwinner Patrick Dangerfield provided another angle, which gave more context.

The siren sounded, and Bell Park won the clash by two points - 7.7 (49) to 6.11 (47).

The win gives Bell Park a chance to face Newtown & Chilwell Seniors in a do-or-die semi-final clash.

The pair of clubs last played each other in Round 17 when Bell Park won by eight points.

Elsewhere, a scoreboard error prevented an extra-time finish between Wonthaggi and Warragul, with the goal umpires needing to confer to confirm the correct scores.

In the Gippsland league, Warragul advanced through the semi-finals after Wonthaggi were stripped of an extra behind they were awarded earlier in the match.

The scores were level at 82-all, but once the final siren rang, and the umpires exchanged notes, they determined an incorrect behind was handed to Wonthaggi, leaving them on 13.3 (81) to Warragul's 12.10 (82).

Wonthaggi progressed to face Leongatha in the preliminary final, with the winner set to play Moe in the decider.
