Richmond coach Damien Hardwick can't seem to catch a break when it comes to injuries in 2021, with gun midfielder Shane Edwards the latest premiership star sent to the casualty ward.

Edwards suffered a suspected ankle injury in the third-term of Friday's dramatic 63-point defeat to Geelong in the Grand Final rematch.

Tigers youngster Patrick Naish was subbed into the game in place of Edwards, who look distressed as was assisted off the field before having his night brought to an abrupt ending.

Edwards joins an elite list of wounded stars at Punt Road, with skipper Trent Cotchin (hamstring), Dylan Grimes (concussion), Kane Lambert (calf) and Dion Prestia (calf) all currently sidelined.

Hardwick is likely to welcome back Grimes for his side's Round 9 clash with Greater Western Sydney at Marvel Stadium next week, but the club fears Edwards will be at least one name making way for the key defender.

Despite the dominant second-half display, Geelong will be battling injury concerns of their own after Sam Simpson and Luke Dahlhaus suffered their own setbacks.

Simpson was subbed out of the match after the main break with a suspected hamstring complaint, with medical sub Quinton Narkle coming into the game in the third-quarter.

Dahlhaus also had his night brought to a premature close after suffering a suspected rib injury in the second-half of the match.

The Cats will look to add consecutive wins next weekend when they face St Kilda on Friday at Marvel Stadium.
