Who is the best veteran in the AFL?
In the wake of the AFL's 22 u22 40-man squad being revealed, I took the liberty of ranking the best 32 over-32-year-olds.
I used Zero Hanger's AFL Player Rater - our system uses a proven Elo rating algorithm - the same system used in global sports rankings. All players start with the same rating, and each vote adjusts their score based on the strength of their opponent.
Every vote directly impacts the live AFL Player Ratings, creating a dynamic, fan-driven leaderboard of the best players in the AFL.
Beating a highly ranked player earns more points, while losing to a lower-ranked player results in a bigger drop. This creates a constantly evolving ranking system that rewards form, consistency, and performance - meaning the best AFL players rise to the top based on real fan opinion.
The rankings were recorded at Aug 6.

Tim Kelly (Rank 32)
The Eagles veteran has been a quiet achiever this year, returning near to his best. Kelly has helped the development of Harley Reid whilst also assuming responsibility of the midfield.
Nathan Broad (Rank 31)
The premiership Tiger recently announced his retirement, with his last game in Round 23 at the MCG against St Kilda. But this year, he has been a beacon, along with Nick Vlaustin, in defence. Broad has usually played undersized on the competition's best forwards, but has also been prominent in helping fast-track the young Tigers.
Stephen Coniglio (Rank 30)
The Giants veteran has been playing a variety of roles, and in the last few weeks, has started hitting the scoreboard frequently as a half-forward. Coniglio is tipped to go around again next year.
Jarrod Witts (Rank 29)
The Suns ruck hasn't adapted well to the rule changes, and has been playing VFL footy recently. Witts is tipped to remain at the Suns next year.
Darcy Fort (Rank 28)
Another ruck in the top 30 of the veterans of the AFL, Fort is set to play a career-high number of games this year, eclipsing last season's record of 21 matches. He works well in tandem with Sam Draper, working as the Robin to his Batman.
Jack Crisp (Rank 27)
The Pies' Mr Fix-It has continued his incredible consecutive games streak, and doesn't appear to be slowing down. Crisp's influence on games isn't as noticeable, but his durability and consistency are what make him one of the better veterans in the AFL.
Ryan Lester (Rank 26)
The Lions defender continues to hold significant roles in the backline. Lester has been tasked with curbing some of the game's best forwards, and his absence is crucially felt.
Mark Blicavs (Rank 25)
The original unicorn, the Cats utility can play everywhere, on anyone, and he proves that week-in, week-out. Blicavs is Chris Scott's Joker card, and he'll have a pivotal role in the club's premiership chances.
