A degree of Richmond's headaches this season can come down to conceding a substantial amount of 50-metre penalties, with five players having surrendered three or more so far this year.

Lacking discipline, Richmond's mid-match misdemeanours have been costly to their hopes of returning to the top eight this year, with lively midfield-forward hybrid Shai Bolton the main culprit.

The 23-year-old is tied for most 50m penalties in 2022 with five against his name, level with Geelong forward Tom Hawkins.

Senior quartet Trent Cotchin, Dylan Grimes, Jayden Short and Jack Graham have all conceded three each, seeing five Richmond players rank among the top 18 in the league.

The Tigers lead the way for 50m penalties conceded across the competition, with 37 instances for the year seeing the Punt Road side commit 14 more than the next highest in North Melbourne.

The Roos' tally of 23 is narrowly ahead of West Coast (22), St Kilda (21), Brisbane (20) and Collingwood (20).

Eagles veteran Jeremy McGovern has given away 4 50m penalties from just 10 appearances, equating to an error every 2.5 games. Emerging Magpies forward Ollie Henry and Hawks gun Changkuoth Jiath have also conceded 4 50m penalties.

Contrastingly, the Suns have given up just the 9 50m penalties, three fewer than Fremantle and Melbourne, while Carlton (13) and Geelong (14) are also among the more discipline clubs.

50m penalties saw a spike early into the year due to the newly-introduced dissent rule, which has since been scaled back by the league.

Starting off their season with eight 50m penalties against in their Round 1 loss to Carlton had Richmond quickly placed into an unwanted pole position, with Damien Hardwick's men continuing to struggle in limiting the costly concessions.
