The Laverton Magpies Football Netball Club has issued a statement on the wellbeing of their player after a serious medical incident this weekend.

A senior men's game against the Wyndham Suns Football Club ended abruptly last Saturday when a Laverton player sustained a serious head injury. The game was abandoned and medical personal attended to the situation.

In a statement issued today, Laverton has confirmed that the player is now recovering.

"The health, safety and wellbeing of our players will always remain our highest priority," the statement said.

"We are pleased to advise that our player has since been discharged from hospital and is recovering well at home with his family."

The event was particularly shocking give its proximity to the tragic passing of Nathan Fitzgerald, a footballer representing Epping Football Club, who obtained the serious head injuries that led to his death, just a week earlier.

Fitzgerald's family, friends and teammates were welcomed to the MCG on the weekend as guests of the Richmond Tigers, as the football community collectively mourns his passing.

"While Saturday's events were incredibly distressing, they serve as a powerful reminder that the welfare of our players will always come first," the statement said.

"The support shown by both clubs, officials, medical personnel and the wider community is a credit to our game and demonstrates the strength of our football family when it matters most."
