This year's AFL Grand Final could be moving to Sydney, with ANZ Stadium interested in hosting the big decider, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The last AFL match held at the former Olympic stadium was in 2015. More than 70,000 fans could attend the grand final, the largest venue capacity outside of the MCG.

With the recent spike in coronavirus cases in Victoria, the report states the NSW Government is "excited" about the possibility of hosting the AFL's biggest event.

NSW Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres said Sydney would be ready to host the grand final if the game was moved.

"I expect the AFL Grand Final to be at the MCG as usual but if that's not possible I'm sure we could help them out and have it here in Sydney,' he told The Daily Telegraph.

In a separate report, Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula told the Herald Sun the Grand Final is "going nowhere".

"The MCG is home of football and it's where the Grand Final will be played until at least 2057," Pakula told the Herald Sun.

"It's not going anywhere."

As big crowds return to stadiums in Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland over the coming weeks, the battle to host this year's Grand Final heats up.

The date fans could return to watching games live in the stands has been pushed back with the recent outbreak of COVID-19 cases.
