AFL journalist Mike Sheahan has raised the possibility that the AFL could see change to the format of their Grand Final, saying that we could soon see a 'best of three' series to decide a premiership champion.

Sheahan said that non-Victorian football officials and administrators will be seeking a change to the AFL's biggest game of the year, explaining that we could see a "push soon."

โ€œGiven the commission has a strong non-Victorian participation, including a WA chairman, I wouldnโ€™t be at all surprised in my limited lifetime that we see a best of three Grand Final,โ€ Sheahan told SEN Breakfast.

This particular finals format is a staple of Australia's domestic basketball league, the NBL, which just recently showcased their best of five series that went to five games in an exciting series.

Adapting this format would bring a different dynamic to how finals-bound teams approach the Grand Final and creates flexibility for a Grand Final match to potentially be played in a non-Victorian stadium.

โ€œI believe that there will be a push soon for a best of three Grand Final series to minimise the disadvantage that the non-Victorian teams suffer," Sheahan explained.

โ€œThere is a high-powered official from a non-Victorian club who believes in it."

โ€œIf the non-Victorian clubs work together as a block, thatโ€™s six of them. Thatโ€™s a strong force.โ€
