Carlton have revealed defender Sam Docherty will miss the remainder of the 2024 season after suffering a ruptured ACL and torn meniscus during Friday's win over Brisbane.

The heartbreaking news confirms the third ACL injury for the former Carlton captain, who also spent time away from football following a recent cancer battle.

Docherty was subbed out of his side's Opening Round win over the Lions at half-time following a knee concern in the opening quarter of the game at the Gabba.

On Saturday the club confirmed the extent of the ailment, which will see Docherty sidelined for the rest of the season.

“There is arguably no player in our competition who is more beloved than Sam Docherty,” Carlton General Manager of Football Brad Lloyd said in a statement.

“Football becomes almost insignificant when you consider all Sam has endured and overcome over the last few years, this news simply isn't fair, but as Carlton people we love Sam dearly - we will support him through this so he can return to the field when he is ready.

“It won't just be the entire Carlton family behind Sam, I can safely say the football world no doubt will be as well.

“His impact on our side will certainly be missed on the field, however his impact on his teammates and on the selfless environment we are creating will continue to be profound right throughout the Club.

“Sam will throw his heart and soul into helping his teammates get the best out of themselves because that is just the person he is - and he knows we'll be right alongside him through every step of his rehabilitation.”

Docherty has played 168 games at AFL level, having started his career with Brisbane before moving to Carlton at the end of 2013.

He was named captain of the club in 2019 and would step back from his duties ahead of the 2022 season, handing sole captaincy to Patrick Cripps.

Docherty re-signed with the Blues last year on a deal that will see him remain at Princes Park until the end of next year.
