Hawthorn assistant coach Sam Mitchell has withdrawn from the race for the head coaching role at Collingwood.

According to Sam McClure of The Age Mitchell won't be contending for the Collingwood job.

Mitchell had been pegged as a possible candidate for the role vacated by Nathan Buckley but has decided that his future lay away from the Holden Centre.

The four-time premiership star is seen as one of the game's future master coaches and is practicing his trade and Alistair Clarkson. Many have wondered whether Mitchell would seek a move away from the Hawks with Clarkson giving no indication he will be departing anytime soon.

Collingwood had reportedly identified Mitchell and former North Melbourne coach Brad Scott as potential candidates while having also made contact with former St Kilda and Fremantle head coach Ross Lyon.
