Rugby league legend Greg Inglis has revealed Essendon approached him in 2010 to join its football program, amid the Melbourne Storm's salary cap nightmare.

Speaking on theย Footy Talk podcast, the former Storm player, who appeared 118 times for the storied franchise between 2005-10, shared details about agreeing to be a Bomber before learning of the aerobic strains involved.

"I have been approached a fair few times, through school and coming out of school and into grade and that," Inglis started.

"I guess rugby league was just in my blood. I played all [kinds of] different sports, I tried different things, but I [have] always been drawn back to rugby league.

"When I was in Melbourne, and that 2010 (salary cap) saga happened (at the Storm), Essendon came over and approached me and I said yes because I loved Melbourne so much that I wanted to stay there and around. Then I found out how many [kilometres] they had to run and I went 'nah'," laughed Inglis.

Inglis maintained his passion for rugby league above all else, crediting that as the ultimate reason he didn't switch codes for the AFL and instead rounded out his NRL career with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

"It just comes back to what I was passionate about, what I loved doing, and where would I get the most kicks from โ€ฆ it was always going to go back to [rugby] league."
