North Melbourne midfielder Ben Jacobs has been ruled out of this week's clash with Richmond after suffering a setback in his return from injury.

Jacobs played just seven games last season due to a foot injury and underwent further surgery in February this year, after again breaking the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

He recently returned via the VFL and he racked up 43 disposals in Werribee's last game a fortnight ago.

He was a chance to return to the senior side this week, however, he has suffered a minor setback and has been ruled out of this week's clash with the Tigers.

"Ben Jacobs won't play at any level this week," coach Brad Scott said.

"He's a little sore in the ankle, completely unrelated to the foot injury."

North Melbourne has a brilliant record over Richmond of late, winning 14 of the past 19 games against the Tigers.
