Geelong is reportedly gearing up to attack "two more stars" that will shock the competition.

The Cats are understood to have a surprise "war chest" that they'll use to target multiple players from rival clubs, whilst also being heavily invested in Harley Reid and Zak Butters.

The pair are contracted to their respective clubs for 2026, but with ties to country Victoria, and the opportunity to join the perpetually contending side, Geelong poses as a legitimate destination.

"Harley Reid and Zak Butters are at the top of that list," Channel 7's Mitch Cleary said.

"Both are contracted for this year, so it would be more for next year. But Steve Hocking told a Pivots function at the weekend before the Gold Coast game that the Cats have enough room in their salary cap over the next couple of years to go after two more stars.

"We know the success they've had with Jeremy Cameron, Patrick Dangerfield and Bailey Smith from other clubs, but the Cats are not done yet.

"That will be a surprise to a lot of fans around the competition... but the Cats are setting up to go big again, and have some big names in their sights."

Melbourne's Clayton Oliver was discussed in last year's trade period, and even went as far as meeting Geelong veterans in the off-season.

Gold Coast's Matt Rowell is weighing up a move to his home state, but could remain put given the improvement of the Suns in 2025.

Fremantle ruckman Luke Jackson was also presented as a trade target, given his partner is from the Geelong area.

Geelong coach Chris Scott fueled the club's ambitions to lure star talent to Kardinia Park, indicating just how they do it onย Channel 7's The Agenda Setters.

"I think we're like every club. We sort of think big initially," Scott said.

"(But) we are in a position (to think about it). One of the fortunate things about having a more experienced list, which has been the case for a long time now, is that we tend to have had players who have been on big salaries in their prime but are sort of coming down.

"It would make sense when we lose Patrick (Dangerfield) at some point, Jeremy Cameron, that there'd be a bit of room there, but hand on heart, it's not something I have great visibility over.

"I certainly know that we can be in the market."
