Promising Essendon midfielder Sam Durham has signed a two-year contract extension to remain at the club through to 2024.

Durham, 20, was selected by the Bombers at the 2021 Mid-Season Draft and has been a positive feature of coach Ben Rutten's side, playing in each of Essendon's last nine games dating back to Round 18, 2021, including the club's elimination final loss to the Bulldogs.

The former Richmond VFL regular expressed his appreciation for the Bombers and his excitement at being able to remain in the red and black for years to come.

"I've been so grateful for every opportunity I've had at the Bombers, and I can't wait to spend the next couple of years at the club," Durham told Essendon's official website.

"It's great to know they have the belief in me and it's exciting to be a part of a young side that has a lot of potential."

Durham's best performance as a Bomber thus far came last season in a Round 20 win against the Suns, when he racked up 20 disposals, six marks and a goal in the 68-point win.

Essendon list boss Adrian Dodoro commended Durham's playstyle and spoke highly of the youngster's personality.

"His tough mentality and style of football combined with his versatility across the ground makes him a very valuable player and I look forward to seeing where he takes his football over the next two years," Dodoro said.

"Sam is a caring, unassuming young man who goes about his business quietly, and his versatility and ability to play as an inside and outside midfielder makes him an asset for our emerging side. We look forward to seeing his growth over the coming years."

Durham and his Bombers will be looking to secure their first win of the season when they go toe-to-toe with Adelaide at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
