Richmond veterans Dustin Martin and Dylan Grimes have been ruled out of Richmond's clash with Sydney due to calf and wrist issues respectively.

Martin, who missed his side's season opener due to the same issue, has been battling the ailment across the start of the season.

Coach Adem Yze revealed on Friday morning that the club is trying to "break the pattern" of Martin training through the pain each week, with incoming rest set to aid the Brownlow Medal winner for the long haul.

Following an "interrupted couple of weeks" for Martin, Yze said a week off should see Martin back fit and firing for Round 4.

"Dusty is going to miss this week," Yze told reporters.

"He's had an interrupted week, he's actually had an interrupted couple of weeks with his calf. He didn't train the other day, he'll only do a little bit today.

"We've just got to break the pattern of him getting through week to week. So we're going to break that cycle this week and give him a light week so he's pain free.

"He's just been battling a bit the last couple of weeks with his calf. He's still trying to perform as he normally does, his first half of last week was terrific.

"You can see he just gets a little bit sore. So we're gonna help him through that and give him a week off this week. Hopefully he'll be 100% the following week."

Martin's absence adds to recent midfield blows to Dion Prestia (hamstring) and Jacob Hopper (knee), who are both facing more than a month on the sidelines.

Richmond confirmed on Friday afternoon that Grimes will also miss the match due to a wrist injury.

The Tigers have also lost young defender James Trezise (ankle) for the coming weeks, with the 2023 Mid-Season recruit joined by Judson Clarke as those withdrawn from Yze's squad for Round 3.

Young duo Kane McAuliffe and Hugo Ralphsmith have been named in the extended squad as replacements for Martin and Grimes.

Richmond also named Nathan Broad, Tyler Sonsie, Maurice Rioli, Sam Naismith and Tylar Young as inclusions to their 26-man squad, with Broad expected to resume his role in defence alongside Young.

Sonsie, Rioli, McAuliffe, Ralphsmith and Young are joined by Thomson Dow, Sam Banks, Mykelti Lefau, Sam Naismith and Ben Miller as options to be named for the Tigers' interchange.

The Tigers' squad will be named at 5:00pm (AEDT) on Friday.
