Richmond have provided an injury update on Dion Prestia and Jayden Short, refusing to rule the duo out of Round 1 contention despite suffering injuries in the lead up to the season opener.

Prestia suffered a strained pectoral muscle in Saturday's pre-season practice match against Melbourne, not returning to the field after the second-term injury. The three-time premiership Tiger was spotted running laps at half-time though, easing fears around the seriousness of his injury.

The club confirmed Prestia had suffered the strain, but that the 30-year-old remains "a chance" to play in Round 1 against Carlton.

Richmond also confirmed that Jayden Short has suffered a left calf strain, putting his availability for the season opener in doubt.

Short, who debuted for the Tigers in 2016, hasn't missed a game since Round 15 of the 2019 season.

"Scans have confirmed midfielder Dion Prestia suffered a strained pectoral muscle in Saturday's practice match against Melbourne at Casey," Richmond said.

"Prestia remains a chance to play in the Round 1 clash against Carlton at the MCG on March 16.

"Scans have also revealed Jayden Short has a left calf strain."

Richmond will get their season underway on Thursday, March 16 against Carlton at the MCG.
